Black History Month is a time to recognize and celebrate Black individuals' achievements, contributions, and resilience throughout history.

The Origins of Black History Month

Black History Month was first established as "Negro History Week" in 1926 by historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson. His goal was to ensure that Black Americans' accomplishments and rich history were acknowledged and taught. Over time, this week expanded into a full month, and in 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized February as Black History Month.

Honoring Black Leaders in Finance & Education

At Education First Credit Union, we are committed to financial empowerment and education. As we celebrate Black History Month, we recognize the contributions of Black leaders who have shaped these fields, such as:

Maggie Lena Walker – The first Black woman to charter a bank in the U.S. Walker founded the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank in 1903, promoting economic independence in Black communities.

Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune – An educator and civil rights leader who founded Bethune-Cookman University and advocated for equal education for Black students.

Reginald F. Lewis – A pioneering entrepreneur and financier, Lewis was one of the first Black billionaires in America and an advocate for economic empowerment.

Financial Empowerment for All

At Education First Credit Union, we believe that financial literacy and access to resources are essential for economic success. We encourage everyone to take steps toward financial empowerment this Black History Month. Whether it’s learning about budgeting, saving for the future, or starting a business, financial well-being plays a crucial role in building strong communities.

Looking Ahead

Black history is American history. By acknowledging the past and working toward a more inclusive future, we can ensure that the legacy of Black leaders continues to inspire generations to come.

At Education First Credit Union, we are proud to celebrate Black History Month and reaffirm our commitment to education, financial empowerment, and community support.
